Tour de Barcelona

Hola again from the beautiful (although very smelly) city of Barcelona!

Today we took the advice of Elizabeth back home (thanks E!) and did a 5 hour bike tour of the city with a company called Fat Tire Bike Tours (formerly Mike's Bikes). It was SO much fun! We got to ride these old style bikes with fenders, horns, and everything and did a 11-12 kilometer ride through the city. Stuart kept laughing at me b/c I went a little "horn crazy" all day, but it was good fun. We saw all the sights including the famous opera house, the unfinished cathedral by Gaudi, the Barcelona Cathedral, Queen Elizabeth and King Ferdinand's place of residence where Christopher Columbus came to in order to ask permission to come to the Americas (REALLY COOL!), and then of course the beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean.

Chris, our bike tour guide, was quite the history buff and taught us all a ton about Spain. Oh and Gaudi's designs are abslutely AMAZING! The unfinished cathedral is incredibly impressive, as the statues built into the sides of it all represent stories of the Bible. The bike tour was really a great way to see the city though and Stuart and I have vowed that we'll do the other Fat Tire Bike Tours in Berlin and Paris so we can get our cards stamped and earn our **free** T-shirts! WHOOP! ;-)

We then had a lovely lunch down on the beach and waded into the VERY chilly water for a couple of minutes. Let me just say that my first experience at a topless beach was quite eye opening...HA! ;-) The water was gorgeous though!

Tonight we plan to go back into town and have a nice dinner for Stuart's last night here and then do a bit more wandering. We're trying to take it easy and enjoy the holiday. I meet up with Aunt Karol tomorrow in Barcelona where we'll be for another couple of days before heading over to Madrid. There's still PLENTY more to see here in Barcelona so I'm excited I have another few days.

Anyway, have to get the beach off of me now and get ready for dinner but I'll try and post more tomorrow! I hope everyone is doing well!

Love,
V :-)

Sorry this is a bit late,

I spoke to one of my Dutch spies. They said that the Netherlands (literally, 'low countries') used to be all of Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg etc. Then they all became independent over time. The part that was known as Holland (North and South Holland in fact) also was the most populus, strongest economy etc, and was known as 'Royal Netherlands', hence why the use of both names today.

The things you learn in Kabul! Sounds like you guys are having a fantastic time. Hopefully catch up with you both in the summer.

VICKI!! I just tried to leave you a comment, but my totally un-cool, behind-the-times self (who has never checked out a blog before) messed it up so anyway...
I was really excited to check out your blog and see your most recent goings-on. It looks like you and Stuart are having a wonderful time - - that is quite an itinerary you have set up for the month of June! Have a fabulous time and know that the rest of us (especially me) are so super jealous of you! Keep the details coming :)

I had no idea we could leave you comments!!! No wonder people likes blogs so much! :-) I love reading all about your trip. I feel like I'm on vacation too (instead of stupid VBS). I just have one question.....did YOU go topless at the beach? It should have been pretty easy to do after visiting the prostitution training center. hahaha. Just kidding. Can't wait to hear what is next!!
